Severe sentencing for dishonesty

Have you followed the Telgi case? This is the man who created fake stamp papers and earned millions of rupees. And he was able to continue that for several years. Finally he was caught and now he being tried in the court. I have not been following the trial very close, but recently he was in the news again. After the trial has started he sought bail on medical grounds. He produced false certificates from doctors declaring him as suffering from high blood pressure and other ailments. For this case CBI Special court passed the judgment yesterday. This is normal news but what inspired me to write this blog was the severity in the sentence. Telgi was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment and 25 lakh fine. Did you see that? 25 lakh. This is probably the first time I am hearing imposing such an exorbitant amount as fine by a court. I have heard several more severe cases where the fine amounts were not greater than ten thousand rupees. What created a compulsive mood to write this is the punishment for the doctors who provided the false certificates. For two doctors involved, 7 years in prison, and 14 lakh fine was imposed. This should be an eye opener for all those serving government that, misuse of power and dishonesty can result in total destruction of their life. Humiliation that they should undergo should be a lesson for everybody. Now it does not matter if the higher courts reduce the punishment and the fines but they are proved guilty.

So, my dear fellow Indians, there may be only few that are brought to justice, but the introspection at every moment of your life like 'am I doing right?'; be at work or anywhere is most important thing that we should thrive to practice. Be honest to your job, relationship and to the mankind.

Humm, the punishments seem excessive for the crimes. However I admit I am ignorant of the cultural context.

Perhaps it's similar to a case of a man in Texas getting 90 years on a minor drug bust. In other U.S. states, and most of western Europe he'd have no jail time, and only a small fine.

As always one's fate the world over seems to depend on local custom.

Texas law is brutal, inflexable. The cowboy/Confederate heritage is the root of that.

"Justice, and Law are rarely the same thing". This was told to me by a friend who has been a judge for many years.

Pity.

The world would be a more humane place if these two estranged sisters spoke more often.
